You've probably heard about identity theft and how it's growing rapidly. This happens when cyber criminals stealthily take control over your computer and steal credit card info, social security numbers, bank account credentials and other personal data and use them for illicit financial gains.

To keep safe from this kind of threats, you should run a complete security solution on your PC and make sure that it's updated with the latest antivirus signatures. An anti virus signature is a sort of fingerprint of the malicious code, which can be identified and captured by the antivirus solutions.

The Defender Pro security suite relies on a system of hourly antivirus signature updates and on proactive malware detection technologies, which detect new, unsigned malware based on its behavior.

To change it, you can either edit the existing System Scan task, or clone it and set the weekly time information in the scheduler.

The Defender Pro 2011 Expert view dashboard indicates the time of your last antivirus scan. If it was run more than a week before, we recommend that you scan your computer as soon as possible.

To scan the entire computer, go to Security and run either Full System Scan or a Deep System Scan.

Cleaning infected files from the Windows XP System Restore

The Restore folder is protected by default and prevents programs from using or manipulating the files that are within this folder. These
files are inactive while in the data store and are not used by any utility other than System Restore.
The System Restore feature is not designed to detect or scan for virus infections or virus activity. Most computer virus infections seek or attack files with extensions such as .exe or .com. These are file types that the System Restore feature is designed to monitor.

In order to completely and immediately remove the infected file or files in the data store, you must disable and re-enable the System Restore feature.

When System Restore is turned off, all the restore points are removed. When System Restore is turned on again, new restore points are created as the schedule and events require.

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

2. Click Performance and Maintenance, and then double-click System.

3. Click the System Restore tab, and then click to select the Turn off System Restore for all drives check box.

4. Click OK, and then click Yes to initiate the restore point deletion.

To turn on System Restore again after the restore point deletion has completed, repeat these steps, but click to clear the Turn off System Restore for all drives check box.

How to update Defender Pro 2010

Note: New malware is found and identified every day. This is why it is very important that you keep Defender Pro up to date with the latest malware signatures.

If you are connected to the Internet through broadband or DSL, Defender Pro (by default) automatically checks for updates when you turn on your computer and every hour after that.

To view update-related information, switch to EXPERT MODE and go to the Update module.

A. In the first tab, Update, you can view the last time Defender Pro checked for updates, as well as the see the last time an update was performed, including if the update was successful or if errors had occurred. You will also find information about the current engine version and the number of signatures received.

If you open this window during an update, you will be able to see the download status plus all files that are currently being downloaded.
The Automatic Update can be enabled or disabled in this area by checking or un-checking the check box.
NOTE: In order to be protected against the latest threats, keep the automatic update enabled.

An Update By User Request can be performed at any time as follows:

- From the Novice Mode click on the Update Now button and the Update window will appear.
- From Intermediate Mode go to the Security tab and then click on the Update Now button on the left side of the window.
- From Expert Mode go to the Update tab and click on Update Now.

B. The Settings tab allows you to configure the update settings and manage proxies.

1. Update Location Settings

For faster and more reliable updates, you can configure two update locations:

a) Primary update location

b) Alternate update location

By default, these locations are the same: http://upgrade.bitdefender.com

To modify one of the update locations, provide the URL of the local mirror in the URL field corresponding to the location you want to change.

In case the company uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet, check Use proxy and then click the Manage proxies button to configure the proxy settings. For more information, please refer to Proxy Settings.

NOTE: Configure these settings only if you are connected to a local network that stores Defender Pro malware signatures locally or if you connect to the Internet through a proxy server.

2. Automatic Update Settings

You can specify the number of hours between two consecutive update checks in the Time interval field. By default, the update time interval is set to 1 hour.

To specify how the automatic update process should be performed, select one of the following options:

- Silent update: Defender Pro automatically downloads and implements the update.
- Prompt before downloading updates: every time an update is available, you will be prompted before downloading it.
- Prompt before installing updates: every time an update was downloaded, you will be prompted before installing it.

3. Manual Update Settings

Manual update settings are used to specify how the manual update (update by user request) should be performed:
- Silent update: the manual update will be performed automatically in the background, without user intervention.
- Prompt before downloading updates: every time an update is available, you will be prompted before downloading it.

4. Advanced Settings

To prevent the Defender Pro update process from interfering with your work, configure these options:

- Wait for reboot, instead of prompting: If an update requires a reboot, the product will keep working with the old files until the system is rebooting. The user will not be prompted for rebooting, therefore the Defender Pro update process will not interfere with the user's work.

- Don't update if scan is in progress: Defender Pro will not update if a scan process is running. This way, the Defender Pro update process will not interfere with the scan tasks.

NOTE: If Defender Pro is updated while a scan is in progress, the scan process will be aborted.

- Don't update if Gamer Mode is on: Defender Pro will not update if the Gamer Mode is turned on. This allows for the minimization of the products impact on system performance during gaming.

5. Proxy Settings

If your company uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet, you must specify the proxy settings in order for Defender Pro to update itself. Otherwise, it will use the proxy settings of the administrator that installed the product or of the current user's default browser, if any.

NOTE: The proxy settings can be configured only by users with administrative rights on the computer or by power users (users who know the password to the product settings).

When trying to connect to the Internet, each set of proxy settings is tried at a time, until Defender Pro manages to connect.
First, the set containing your own proxy settings will be used to connect to the Internet. If it does not work, the proxy settings detected at the time of installation will be tried next. Finally, if those do not work either, the proxy settings of the current user will be taken from the default browser and used to connect to the Internet.

Administrator proxy settings (detected at install time):

Administrator proxy settings are proxy settings detected on the administrator's account during installation and which can be configured only if you are logged on to that account. If the proxy server requires a username and a password, you must specify them in the corresponding fields.

Current user proxy settings (from default browser):

Current user proxy settings are proxy settings of the current user that were extracted from the default browser. If the proxy server requires a username and a password, you must specify them in the corresponding fields.

NOTE: The supported Web browsers are Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Opera. If you use another browser by default, Defender Pro will not be able to obtain the proxy settings of the current user.

Your own set of proxy settings:

If you are logged in as an administrator, you have the ability to configure your own proxy settings by specifying the following:
Address: Type in the IP of the proxy server.

Port: Type in the port Defender Pro uses to connect to the proxy server.

Username: Type in a user name recognized by the proxy.

Password: Type in the valid password of the previously specified user.

Click OK to save the changes and close the window.

Click Apply to save the changes or click Default to load the default settings.

NOTE: The update process is performed on the fly, meaning that the files to be updated are replaced progressively. Therefore, the update process will not affect product operation and, at the same time, any vulnerability will be excluded.

Updates are delivered in the following ways:

- Engines upgrades: for the antivirus engines, antispam engines and antispyware engines.

- Product upgrades: when a new product version is released, new features and scan techniques are introduced to improve product performance.

Microsoft regularly issues patches or updates to solve security problems in their software. The critical updates are the ones you should be concerned about. If these are not applied, it leaves your computer vulnerable to hackers. Service Packs are larger updates which upgrade and fix security problems.

The Windows Update feature built into Windows can check your PC against a common database of patches. You go to a Microsoft web site and your operating system is checked against critical updates and a suggested list shows for your PC so that you may download and install these. You should do this periodically.

More recent versions of windows have an Automatic Update feature. This is available in Windows 2000, ME, and XP, Vista and Windows 7. If you turn on this feature, your PC will check for, download and install critical updates over night. This eliminates the need for you to periodically check for updates.

To turn on Automatic Updates in Windows XP (SP2)

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

Click Automatic Updates.

Choose Automatic (recommended).

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

To turn on Microsoft Update in Windows Vista

Open Windows Update (click the Start button, click All Programs, and then click Windows Update).

Click the Get updates for more products button. (Note: If this button does not appear, it's likely you've already enabled Microsoft Update. This may happen when you installed other software programs like Microsoft Office 2007. In this case, the phrase "You receive updates: For Windows and other products from Microsoft Update" should appear near the bottom of the window.)

Follow the instructions to use Microsoft Update. Windows Update will begin to scan your PC for available updates for Windows and other Microsoft products if you have automatic updating turned on.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

To turn on Microsoft Update in Windows 7

Click the Start button to view the Start Menu. Then choose the Control Panel option.

Choose Control Panel.

Click the System and Security link from the Control Panel window.

The System and Security section of Control Panel opens up. Here you can see the Windows Update link.

There is direct links to the important Windows Update option here in slightly small fonts, such as Turn automatic updating on or off, Check for updates, View install updates . You may choose the required option directly from here. But we are going ahead to the dedicated Windows Updates section of the Windows 7 control panel by clicking the main Windows update link.

You can manually look up for any new updates by clicking the Check for updates button under the heading Check for updates for your computer from this window. In order to modify the Windows update option click the Change settings in the left pane.

Here you may change the way Windows 7 download and install updates. Configurable option include Important Updates , Recommended updates , Who can install updates and Featured update notifications .

Important updates provide significant benefits, such as improved security and reliability. Recommended updates can address non-critical problems and help enhance your computing experience. Optional updates are not downloaded or installed automatically.

The latest virus threat aimed at Facebook users is capable of stealing personal passwords, including log-in information for banking. The virus comes via a spam email alert falsely stating that your Facebook account password has been reset.
At least some of the emails have these words in the subject line (but expect variations): ‘Facebook password reset confirmation customer support’.

Do not open such an email because once you do it will begin downloading malware, including the password-stealing virus. Keep in mind Facebook's policy is not to send any new passwords via attachments.

If you opened such an email or suspect your computer has been hacked, for more information go to http://www.facebook.com/help/?page=1014
